Big Event news release: Fall Awareness Week

The Big Event is hosting its second annual Fall Awareness Week, starting Monday, Oct. 15 and ending Saturday, Oct. 20.
The Big Event at KU puts on Fall Awareness Week each school year to kick-start the recruitment process. During Fall Awareness Week, students are encouraged to get involved with the Big Event by either volunteering the day of the event, or to join a committee to help plan this year’s Big Event. Also during Fall Awareness Week, residents are encouraged to start thinking about signing their homes or businesses up as potential job sights for Big Event volunteers.
“Fall Awareness Week is very important to the success of this year’s Big Event. It really sets the tone for our recruitment campaign,” Lauren Reinhart, Executive Director of the Big Event, said.
Many events will take place during Fall Awareness Week. Big Event Executive members as well as Committee members will be tabling for the Big Event on Wescoe Beach as well as the Kansas Union. These volunteers will pass out fliers and other information to get KU students excited about this year’s Big Event.
The Big Event will also be hosting a percentage day at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Thursday, Oct. 18. All Fuzzy’s customers on Oct. 18 that mention The Big Event will donate ten percent of their purchase to The Big Event.
The final event of Fall Awareness Week is Distribution Day, which will take place on Oct. 20. Volunteers will go through Lawrence neighborhood placing fliers on resident’s homes, that will encourage them to sign up for The Big Event. This will be the first of many Distribution Days during the 2012-2013 school year.
“This year’s goal is to have 4,000 volunteers and 400 job sites,” Reinhart said. “Fall Awareness week will be the first step to reaching our goal.”
The Big Event is designed to provide Lawrence community residents with a cost-free helping hand on projects around their neighborhoods or households. The third annual Big Event at KU is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013. Registration for volunteers and community job requests will open in January 2013.
