Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, in Lot 90, near the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. Group leaders will go through the check-in line and pick up tools for their group. Everyone will get a Big Event T-shirt, and participate in our kickoff ceremony at 9:45 a.m.

Be sure to get each member of your group to sign the Participant Signup form — trade this in for a group packet at check-in. We’ll also need a signed Volunteer Statement of Understanding.

Volunteers will leave for job sites starting at 10 a.m. All service projects will be completed by 2 p.m. Each group will need to come back to the Big Event kickoff site to return supplies and job site surveys.

We’re excited to see 3,000 KU students, faculty and staff volunteer at 375 job sites around the Lawrence community on Saturday!

During the meeting, there will be a short presentation outlining the how-to for volunteer check-in on Saturday, April 13. Everyone attending the meeting will receive:

• A group roster with contact information for everyone in your volunteer group
• A description of your group’s job site for Saturday
• Signup forms and waivers
• Additional reminders and how-to tips for Saturday’s event

The Big Event’s mission is to unite KU students, faculty and staff with the Lawrence community, foster a culture of service through collaboration, and continue the tradition of giving back through our one big day, one big thanks, and one big event. As a student leader for the Big Event, you will have the opportunity to establish the groundwork of a long-lasting tradition.

Applications for those interested in executive team are due at 5 p.m. Friday, April 19; committee co-chair and coordinator positions are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 26. Please be sure to read and complete every part of the application.

Here is a schedule of events for the upcoming week:

Tabling: Tabling will be taking place Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, on Wescoe Beach. Big Event committee members will be talking to students walking by about the Big Event and encouraging them to sign up to volunteer for the Big Event. Sign up on the spot for this year’s day of service.

Bowling with the Big Event: On Wednesday, March 6, from 7-9 p.m. come to JayBowl to bowl with the Big Event! Tickets will be $4, and will cover games and shoes from 7-9 p.m. Students can buy a ticket from a Big Event exec member, at the Union Programs Box Office on level 4 of the Kansas Union, or at the event itself.

Percentage Day at Fuzzy’s: On Thursday, March 7, go eat at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop anytime during the day and mention the Big Event. Mention our organization at the register, and a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to this year’s Big Event.

Distribution Day: On Sunday, March 10, we will be distributing fliers throughout Lawrence to try and recruit homes to sign their residency up for the Big Event. If you need service hours or just want to help, meet us at Memorial Stadium parking lot just off of Mississippi street at 1 p.m.

The Big Event Job Request Form 2013

The Big Event at KU allows community members to request  projects to be completed, free of charge, by KU volunteers. Lawrence residents may submit requests for help with tasks at a home, school, community organization, or public space. Big Event volunteers have painted homes, raked yards, cleaned windows, and more. Most cleaning and work supplies are provided, thanks to gracious donations from local businesses and other sponsors.
